UKM To Study Socio-Economy Of Silam Parliamentary Constituency

LAHAD DATU, July 22 (Bernama) -- The Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) Bangi and the Silam Parliamentary constituency will cooperate to undertake research on the socio-economic development of residents in the constituency based on the local and natural resources available in Silam.

The signing of the Letter of Intent on the research, named People's Development Research Programme (PROPER), was held here Wednesday with the UKM represented by the Deputy Dean of Innovations Research, Faculty of Science and Technology UKM, Professor Dr Salmijah Surif while the Silam Parliamentary constituency was represented by its Member of Parliament (MP) Saleh Kalbi.

"PROPER is a Research Programme on the Development of the People in the Sabah East Coast (Silam Parliamentary Constituency) involving UKM researchers from the various disciplines led by the Faculty of Science and Technology. The UKM is very supportive of the idea to involve the community in its researches," Prof Salmijah told reporters, here today.

Prof Salmijah said 11 professors and senior lecturers with expertise in areas such as water studies, biodiversity, food science, tourism, education, chemistry, hydrology, toxicology, radiation and security, marine ecosystem, chemical technology and other sectors were now carrying out a preliminary survey for the past two days to determine the focus of the study.
